Personal Effects Overseas Relocations

Relocation Inspection: 

  1. Our consultant will require anywhere from a half-hour to an hour to conduct a thorough inspection and appraisal of your furniture and effects. 
  2. You should then receive a written email quotation within 7 days following.
  3. You can pack your own boxes. Some clients elect to pack clothes, books, and linen only and leave the more fragile & bulky items to us. 
  4. It should however be noted that any breakages in those boxes packed by the client are the client’s responsibility. 


Requirements:

  • It is the customer’s responsibility to get insurance but we can get an insurance quote for the customer upon request with handling charges.
  • Personal information related to the shipment includes “What is your reason for travel” and “What is your occupation”. These can be used to confirm what type of clearance you need at the destination, whether as personal effects or commercial clearance.
  • Completion of a Customs Form – depending on the destination country - uploading a copy of those parts of your passport with your photo and your signature and, if required, a copy of your visa if you are not a citizen of the destination country.

Moving Abroad Destination Charges

 Destination charges include a wide range of charges including:

  • Customs clearance, including data entry and presentation of documentation
  • Quarantine clearance, where applicable
  • Homeland security, where applicable
  • Customs Inspection Fees,
  • Quarantine Inspection Fees,
  • Port Document Fees,
  • Port Handling Charges,
  • Warehouse handling charges.

Tax and Duty on My Belongings | Furniture

  • If your item has a date of manufacture and is less than six months old, the law states tax and duty must be paid on it.
  • The date of manufacture can often be read on the plate on the back of the TV or similar item which also has the Product Code. 
  • If your shipment is mostly clothing and they are not being shipped in their shop wrapping then they will usually go through without issue.

What are the potential consequences if a shipment contains an item where the advice of the customs hasn’t been followed?

  • Customs can charge you duty or a fine
  • You may delay your shipment
  • The items or shipment may be destroyed
  • You may incur additional charges


You will need to upload scans of your passport - the picture page, the signature page and if applicable, a copy of your visa, at the final stage of the process  

Australia Custom

 Your shipment of personal effects and household items can be imported duty-free if you fulfil this criterion:

  1. You are a returning Australian citizen, or, non-citizen with long stay / permanent residence visa who are returning to take up permanent residence after a period of more than 12 months outside Australia;
  2. If you are not already in Australia, then you do not need to be present when your shipment is imported but you must be planning to return within 6 months of importing your shipment;
  3. The items you are importing as your personal effects and household items have been owned for more than 12 months and are not for resale, disposal, gifted, leased / hire out or otherwise used for business purpose.

Will my Items be Fumigated   


  • If you are traveling to Australia, please be aware the Customs and Quarantine officials are very strict and will restrict or prohibit items from entering the country.
  • If you have items of furniture, picture frames, work tools or ornaments made from wood, they will need to be treated as they could be a potential biosecurity risk. 
  • Fumigations, irradiation, heat and cold storage treatments should be carried out by biosecurity-approved treatment providers. 
  • The many varied treatments can be found on the Australian Government website.
  • Find out if your items can be imported into Australia by checking the Biosecurity Import Conditions system or BICON

The Department of Agriculture and Water Resources has the right to inspect all shipments of personal effects and household items. They have the right to demand that items within the shipment be either cleaned, irradiated or removed for deep burial which will incur additional charges.

Malaysia custom

Your shipment of personal effects and household items can be imported duty-free if:

  1. You must be the owner of the personal effects and household items.
  2. You must have owned and been in possession of the items for a period greater than 6 months.
  3. You must be present in Malaysia when your shipment arrives.


You may be asked to provide your original passport and other relevant documents if requested by the Malaysian customs authority, otherwise, all items will be subject to tax and duty. For example:

  1. For returning Malaysians:
    a . Copy of identity card, both the front and the back.
  2. For non-Malaysian citizens:
    a. Copy of work permit or letter of employment confirming employment in Malaysia.
    b. Copy of visa. 

Singapore custom

Your shipment of personal effects and household items can be imported duty-free if:

  1. You are a Non-Singapore citizen and you will need to:
    a. Provide a copy of both sides of the Employment Pass card (EP) or Dependant Pass card (DP) or Long Term Visit Pass card (LTVP) or Student Pass card (SP) from the Ministry of Manpower or an In-Principal Approval letter from the Ministry showing you have an imminent job offer or letter stating your application status.
    b. You must import your personal effects and household items within 6 months of Official Arrival for the shipment to enjoy GST Relief.
  2. You are a Singapore citizen or Permanent Residence and you will need to:
    a. Provide your Departure Date from Singapore whether on an overseas assignment or overseas study.
    b. Provide a copy of both sides of Permanent Residence ID, and Current Re-Entry Permit (REP).
    c. You must have been overseas for a Minimum Period of 6 months to enjoy GST Relief.
  3. You must be in Singapore when the shipment of your personal effects and household items arrives. If you are a returning Singapore citizen you do not need to be in the country, but you must be able to provide your returned date to Singapore.
  4. You are a Singapore citizen who has been studying overseas you need to provide a copy of your Student ID – both sides or your Student Visa.


GST of 7% is levied on the total declared value on the customs form but the value can is still subject to customs approval based on the declared inventory items.

The import must be done within 6 months of arrival in Singapore otherwise GST will apply.
